Portimao
Portimâo is on the estuary of the river Arade and is still an agricultural and fishing town. Like many other cities in the Algarve it was destroyed by the earthquake in 1755 and only a very small part of the original Roman and Moorish city now remains and is hidden under the houses of the new city. You can still visit many monuments here including some very old pre-Christian burial sites and tombs. If you are a bird watcher you will be charmed while you study the migratory birds nesting along the river. If you are very active you will combine your water activities with visits to the close agricultural countryside where you will see the rich fauna and flowers which, together with the forests and woods, frame the cultivated fields. If you are a golfer you can swing your clubs and lose your worries and domestic problems in a relaxed atmosphere.
You will want to go to the beaches, especially to the Praia de Rocha. You will be well rewarded by their beauty as they remain sheltered by the background hills. You can swim. You can while away the hours and days scuba diving. Here is an ideal place for your water skiing or for your Jet-ski. You can have traditional fishing or big game fishing.
Night life is excellent. There are discos for everyone which continue all through the night. The bars are excellent but you may have to wait to be served and even have to drink your beer outside on the pavement or in the street. No one here worries about the limits of the physical bar extension. If you are the possessor of a gambling streak you can enhance your fortune by visiting one or more of the many casinos which are everywhere.
You can find a cheap holiday here. You might prefer to find a cheap deal in one of the numerous hotels. If you are one of a family or group you can rent a family home or small chalet and have your self-catering. Good shopping facilities are available in the centre. All of these are available at discount rates if you search for them. Whatever you need will be there for your enjoyment.
It is easy to get to Portimâo. It is close to Faro airport and you can take a bus or use a taxi. It is close to many other resorts also and you can easily start in one resort and finish your day in another close by. Wherever you go you will have a great holiday.
